Satellite photos taken in 1975 and 2001 also demonstrate how much the sea’s area has shrunk in recent decades. Once covered by water, the Lynch strait that separates the northern and southern basins is now completely exposed, and the southern basin is now filled with industrial ponds artificially filled with water from the northern basin.
