A NARROW CANAL is now all that connects the southern basin to the larger and deeper northern basin. Because the lake levels have dropped so low in recent years, the shallower southern basin would be all dried up if not for the water pumped in from the northern basin to feed industrial ponds for the potash industry. As the water evaporates from these ponds, potassium chloride (potash) and other valuable mineral salts are left behind and harvested by the Dead Sea Works (in Israel) and the Arab Potash Company (in Jordan) for export to the global market.
