AN UNTENABLE IDENTIFICATION. In response to a Ha’aretz story anticipating BAR’s publication of the Jezebel seal, paleographer Christopher Rollston of the Emmanuel School of Religion wrote online that Korpel’s identification of the seal as Queen Jezebel’s is not “tenable.” According to Rollston, the script on the seal cannot possibly date to the ninth century B.C.E.; it must be later and, therefore, after the time of the Biblical queen. Professor Rollston stands alone in his certainty, however, as several other respected and expert paleographers say that the seal and its script could well date to the ninth century.
