SOPHISTICATED WATER SYSTEM. Because Archelais is in the middle of the desert, on a ridge higher in elevation than the Jordan River, a complex system was needed to bring water to the site. Two aqueducts carried the water from springs in the area. The water moved through channels from the main aqueduct to reservoirs like the one shown at right. The water then flowed through conduits to other reservoirs throughout the site and to the agricultural fields.
