TELLING TIME. Archelais went through several phases of occupation from the time of Archelaus’s groundbreaking around the first century C.E. By the second century C.E., it had become a pagan settlement. Archaeologists found a concave sundial with a bearded figure of Heracles carved into its base dating to this period.
