TEARS AMID THE RUBBLE. The first person to enter the synagogue after the attacks was the shamash, the synagogue’s caretaker, Asher Baghdadi (pictured in the rubble shortly after the riots). Baghdadi’s son, Shaul, recalled finding his father “weeping like a child.” Shaul Baghdadi, who salvaged what he could of the codex, reported that he found four of the five books of the Pentateuch among the rubble. These books, however, have never surfaced. What happened to them? Do they still exist?
