As the two teams of diggers approached their final meeting point, the echoes of voices and pickaxes coming through the rock must have caused a great deal of confusion and misdirection. Shimron and Frumkin argue that these “false” tunnels found near the meeting point, one of which is pictured, are places where these misleading sounds briefly caused the teams to chisel away in the wrong direction.
