DIGGING DOWN AND BUILDING UP. Hundreds of ancient columbaria have been discovered in Israel—approximately 40 of them in the vicinity of Jerusalem. The most common type is a manmade cave with rows of niches carved into the soft limestone, as seen in the this columbarium above at Luzit, near Beth Guvrin.
