Without a photo from excavator Nahman Avigad, BAR decided to publish an empty black box in a story about Jerusalem’s ancient cardo in December 1977. The unwillingness of some archaeologists to provide us with photos of their discoveries has proven to be a sticking point throughout BAR’s 34 years.
