POTTERY WITH PIZZAZZ. Canaanites in the Late Bronze Age—just before the emergence of the Israelites—filled their houses and tombs with elaborately decorated pottery and imported wares. By such means the emerging Israelites sought to distinguish themselves from their neighbors, ultimately defining themselves as a distinct ethnic group.
