The cemeteries surrounding the Phoenician site of Tel Achziv were in continuous use from the tenth to the sixth century B.C.E. The tenth century saw an evolution from tombs that were dug partially into the sandstone (shown here) and built of well-cut ashlars to entirely rock-cut tombs.
