Under the influence of international trade, many pieces of jewelry and other decorative pieces at Achziv reflect clear Egyptian ritual and artistic styles. Numerous imported items, including intricate Egyptian scarabs and minutely carved amulets were excavated from the Phoenician tombs. The scarab shown here contains the hieroglyphic signs for the sun god Amun-Re (on the right) and the cartouche (on the left) of Pharaoh Thutmose III, which was used as decoration for centuries after the pharaoh’s death.
