The finely decorated lintel from a Roman-style temple at Bethsaida demonstrates the wealth of some of the village’s inhabitants, although others remained impoverished. Jesus’ inclusive vision of blessings for all Israel—rich and poor—probably didn’t sit well with the well-to-do, so they rejected him. The “woes” of Matthew 11 and Luke 10 seem to indicate that these prosperous towns were condemned for failing to heed Jesus’ message.
