MORE CONTEXT, STILL NO TOMB. Excavations in Lower Herodium revealed a monumental building built of well-carved ashlars. At first Netzer and his team thought they might have found Herod’s mausoleum, but there was no evidence of a tomb or burial cave inside. Netzer now believes that this building was a triclinium, or dining room with couches along three sides, for hosting mourning meals in honor of the deceased.
