Hidden amid a jumble of ruins, only part of the southern pool is visible today. In the foreground of the west-facing photograph are the remains of second-century A.D. baths dedicated to Asclepius, the Roman god of healing, which no doubt drew on the earlier tradition of the healing power of the site’s waters. The southern basin is visible at the center of the photo, and a Byzantine chapel on the right sits atop the dam that separated the southern pool from the northern one (none of which is currently exposed). Inside the southern pool stand the large foundation columns that supported a Byzantine basilica built over the eastern end of the pool.
