Another type of mine was called the room-and-pillar gallery mine. Here the mine began with a low, broad cave entrance in a hillside. The miners then enlarged the cave, following the ore deposits, until the mine resembled a large hall. They left pillars of uncut stone to support the roof and prevent collapse while they mined.
