HOME FOR BONES. Hundreds of ossuaries have been recovered from Chalcolithic settlement sites and caves in Israel (above). They often have a boxy or “house-like” appearance, with a large opening in the front through which the bones of the dead were inserted. Many of the boxes have stylized facial features, including eyes, noses and mouths.
