Guardian of Lot’s Cave. Just to the left of the basilica’s curved central apse is the cave entrance, framed by an elegant doorway decorated with crosses and rosettes. The well-preserved mosaic pavement leading to the cave features a four-line Greek inscription, set inside a tabula ansata frame (a rectangle with side triangles), that names the church’s bishop and abbot and gives the year as 605 A.D.
