Zoar’s Earliest Bishop. The Greek inscription from this tombstone marked with Christian symbols names the deceased as Apsis, a 55-year-old bishop of the Christian community at Zoar who died on July 29, 369 A.D. The date inscribed on the stone indicates that Apsis was the earliest in a series of bishops responsible for the Christians of Zoar, four of whom are known from other sources.
