Doubter-in-chief Eric Meyers, professor at Duke University and former president of ASOR, has been very critical of the James Ossuary inscription. However, he does not substantively explain why. His suspicions lie rooted in the fact that the ossuary is an unprovenanced artifact (which he disdains) and that it was presented to the world via the media “hoopla” of a popular article and public museum exhibit rather than in a scholarly journal.
