COMPLETING THE PICTURE. A three-dimensional computer model superimposed on an aerial photograph shows the Herodian citadel together with the lower city and aqueduct. While excavation work has focused on the citadel, the lower city is the setting of the most sordid stories from Machaerus. John the Baptist was imprisoned there before he was beheaded, and during the Zealot occupation, the lower city met with a bloody end. A more extensive excavation of the area might well reveal more about the tragic history of Machaerus.
