HACKED INTO GAPING OPENINGS by later quarrying, the fascinating parallel rock-cut tunnels Weill labeled T1 and T2 are still the most imposing of the “tombs.” T1 (on the left in the photo above) is about 54 feet long, 8 feet wide and 6 feet high. T2 (on the right) is about 28 feet long, although evidence suggests it may originally have been more than three times as long. Are these the remains of a royal Davidic necropolis?
