MAKING ROOM FOR MORE KINGS? The floor of the front 32 feet of T1 was lowered in antiquity by 6 additional feet to an overall height of 12 feet, as shown in the photo. At the same time, a new doorway and stairs were carved into the rock to provide access to the lower level. Long horizontal grooves on both sides of the tunnel (at upper left in the photo) likely supported a new floor constructed at the height of the original tunnel floor—effectively dividing the “tomb” into two floors or levels.
