The floor of the front 32 feet of T1 was lowered in antiquity by 6 additional feet to an overall height of 12 feet, as shown in the section drawing. At the same time, a new doorway and stairs were carved into the rock to provide access to the lower level. Long horizontal grooves on both sides of the tunnel likely supported a new floor constructed at the height of the original tunnel floor—effectively dividing the “tomb” into two floors or levels.
