Nahman Avigad

AN ELEGANT RESTING PLACE. Nahman Avigad’s plan and cross-section show the layout of the rock-hewn tomb. A wide passageway was cut on three sides, leaving the façade facing the Kidron Valley. The entrance leads into a small passageway chamber, which in turn leads to the burial chamber itself. The location of the hewn sarcophagus/burial box is on the left side of the burial chamber. Avigad was the first to identify remnants of the monument’s pyramidal roof. His cross-section includes a reconstruction of the tomb’s original shape.
