Halbturn’s Shema‘ amulet is not the only evidence of a Jewish presence in the region. Finds at nearby Carnuntum include an oil lamp with the Hebrew inscription “God” (חולא) and an ancient gemstone (shown here) inscribed with several Greek names for God and the Hebrew character aleph (א).
