OPENLY JEWISH IN A ROMAN COMMUNITY. The epitaph on this second- or third-century C.E. gravestone from Carnuntum memorializes a businessman named Marcus (?) Mulvius and identifies him as “of the house of the Jews” (domo Iudaeus). Although well integrated into their Roman community, the Jews of Carnuntum were not afraid to acknowledge their faith openly.
