DAPHNIS DARING. Ignoring her efforts to dissuade him, Daphnis climbs a tree and picks an extraordinary apple for his love Chloe, as painted by Chagall (1954–1956). Resembling the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden with a few twists, Daphnis and Chloe illustrates how Judeo-Christian texts influenced pagan stories.
