INTO THE DEPTHS. Many of Maresha’s caves were plastered and functioned as massive underground cisterns that collected water from drainage channels running from the surface. The cisterns were often so deep that winding staircases with banisters were needed to reach the bottom, while rope marks worn into the rock show that vessels could also be lowered to gather water.
