“SHE RESIDED WITHIN THE WALL.” Typical Israelite city walls consisted of two parallel walls divided perpendicularly by short walls, forming casemates. These casemates, in turn, formed the back of houses (and other buildings) within the city. Casemate dwellings from Beer-Sheva are illustrated in the photo.
