SAIL FAIL. Two eighth-century B.C.E. Phoenician shipwrecks were found off the coast of Ashkelon during an expedition led by Harvard’s Lawrence Stager and underwater archaeologist Robert Ballard of Titanic fame. Their Mediterranean investigation recovered dozens of amphorae—large storage jars—used for transporting wine that were still intact and arranged as they had been on their initial journey nearly three millennia ago, as pictured here.
