Built by King Herod the Great, Herodium is a palace-fortress in the Judean Desert near Jerusalem that dates to the first century B.C.E. After 35 years of excavation, Israeli archaeologist Ehud Netzer—tragically killed in a fall at the site—believed he located Herod’s mausoleum on the side of the site. Doubts surround Netzer’s theory, so the search for Herod’s tomb goes on.
