“SAYINGS OF JESUS” (the Logia) is what A.S. Hunt and B.P. Grenfell called the papyrus when they published it in 1897 after its discovery during their first excavation season at Oxyrhynchus, Egypt. Now referred to as POxy1, both sides of the early- to mid-third-century leaf are written in Greek. Was this a fragment of the Gospel of Thomas referred to by the Church Fathers? The answer would come only half a century later.
