BY HOOK OR CROOK? Along with President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, Professor Meir Benayahu helped found the Ben-Zvi Institute—a Zionist publishing house and research institution—in 1947 and served as director of the institute for many years. Under his directorship in the 1950s and 1960s, dozens of important Hebrew manuscripts disappeared from the institute’s library. In 1970 Benayahu resigned from the institute, and he died 40 years later in 2009. While some suspect that Benayahu may have been responsible for the missing pages from the Aleppo Codex, BAR author Yosef Ofer thinks it more likely that the pages disappeared in Aleppo during the riots.
