YOUNG TISCHENDORF. Only 29 at the time of this photo in 1844, Tischendorf had already been awarded numerous medals for his textual achievements. This image captures him just after his first visit to St. Catherine’s Monastery as he is about to begin work on the first pages of Codex Sinaiticus, a project that defined his career.
