Legendary eyesight allowed Tischendorf to succeed in transcribing the fifth-century vellum manuscript of Ephraem the Syrian, where many others had failed. The process took Tischendorf two years to complete because the original text had been “washed” and written over in the 12th century. The publication of the Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus earned Tischendorf a scholarly reputation.
