PAUL FOR A NEW AGE. Mani, who was martyred in 277 A.D. by the Sassanian king of kings, founded the Manichaean movement. He saw himself as the Apostle Paul of his time—a prophet and a reformer. He called his missionaries the “Elect,” and the members of the communities they established were called the “Hearers.”
