Hershel Shanks

BAR’S HITTITE ORIGINS. In 1972 on a family exploration of Hazor, six-year-old Elizabeth Shanks found a pot handle with a Hittite god incised on it. Legendary archaeologist Yigael Yadin, who directed excavations at Hazor, identified it as a Late Bronze Age Hittite image and encouraged Elizabeth’s father, BAR’s future editor, to publish it with Yadin’s assistance.k The pot handle reflects a Hittite cultural presence in Canaan, confirmed by finds at Megiddo and elsewhere, during the Late Bronze Age. Elizabeth contributed her find to the Hazor expedition and here receives instruction from Yadin on the significance of her find.
