BAR’S HITTITE ORIGINS. In 1972 on a family exploration of Hazor, six-year-old Elizabeth Shanks found this pot handle with a Hittite god incised on it. Legendary archaeologist Yigael Yadin, who directed excavations at Hazor, identified it as a Late Bronze Age Hittite image and encouraged Elizabeth’s father, BAR’s future editor, to publish it with Yadin’s assistance.^j The pot handle reflects a Hittite cultural presence in Canaan, confirmed by finds at Megiddo and elsewhere, during the Late Bronze Age.
