EPHESUS THEATER. Like many Roman theaters, the Ephesus theater was semicircular. In antiquity, it would have been enclosed but not covered—with a wall behind the stage that connected to the top level of seats. A protective wall between the orchestra (semicircular floor) and cavea (lowest tier of seats) made violent combat between men and animals possible in the theater without endangering the audience.
