ON THE COVER: This statue of Artemis, the patron deity of Ephesus, stands at 5.7 feet tall and dates to the second century C.E. Archaeologist Franz Miltner uncovered the statue at Ephesus in 1956. Artemis has rows of oval pendants—possibly representing bulls’ scrota—hanging from her chest.
