BESEECHING MARY. A prayer to the Virgin Mary is recorded in Rylands Papyrus 470. The papyrus comes from Egypt and is housed in the John Rylands Library at the University of Manchester. Written in Greek, the prayer reads, “We flee to your mercy, Mother of God (Theotokos). Despise not our petitions in our necessity, but deliver us from danger, only pure and only blessed one.”
