TRIUMPHANT TITUS. Opposite the arch’s famous menorah panel, another panel (right) depicts Titus entering Rome in a quadriga (a chariot drawn by four horses). Nike, the goddess of victory, stands behind him and crowns him with a laurel wreath. Titus would later become emperor of Rome (r. 79–81C.E.). The arch itself was built by the Senate and the people of Rome around 81 C.E., shortly after Titus’s death.
