PONTIUS PILATE was the Roman prefect of Judea during the trial and crucifixion of Jesus. Pilate is named in this inscribed stone block, a building dedication. The so-called Pilate Stone was discovered in 1961 lying face-down, reused as a step in the ancient theater at Caesarea Maritima.
