THE TREACHEROUS TERRAIN of the western shore of the Dead Sea about 10 miles south of Jericho has yielded thousands of secrets and been the source of decades of controversy. The wilderness settlement at Qumran pictured here may have housed the sect responsible for the Dead Sea Scrolls.
