COURTESY OF THE LAUTENSCHLÄGER AZEKAH EXPEDITION

EGYPTIAN SCARABS—dung beetle-shaped impression seals engraved with hieroglyphs and religious motifs—comprise a significant group of artifacts excavated within the compound. Dating to the Egyptian 20th Dynasty (c. 12th century B.C.E.), they demonstrate Egyptian activity in the region. The far right example features a suckling gazelle; it was found with the young woman in the courtyard.
