EMANCIPATING ICON. An icon dating from 1609 to 1627 shows Jesus at the moment of his resurrection. He tramples on the doors of Hades and grabs Adam’s and Eve’s wrists to pull them from their graves, while an angel carries his cross. At left, young Abel and three martyrs (indicated by the red mark on their heads) stand behind Eve. David (bearded and crowned) with Solomon (unbearded and crowned) appear to the right of Jesus. Behind them, John the Baptist (gesturing) and an even older king stand. This icon comes from the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit at the Dragomirna Monastery near Suceava, Romania.
