GATE GUARDIANS. The Sphinx Gate in the southern part of Hattusa served as part of the city’s fortifications. The sphinxes were removed and taken to Germany in 1917, for restoration. One was returned to Istanbul and put on display in Istanbul Archaeology Museum, but the other remained in Germany, at the Pergamon Museum. Following numerous requests for its return by the Turkish government, Germany repatriated the second sphinx, and the pair were reunited near their place of origin in the Boğazköy Museum, outside the Hattusa ruins.
