DEATH BY JAWBONE. In this 18th-century painting by Aureliano Milani, the Israelite hero Samson slays 1,000 Philistine men with a donkey’s jawbone after the men of Judah hand him over to the Philistines encamped on their land. This episode in Judges 15 serves as the only reference to Judah in the biblical Samson story.
