COURTESY OF THE TEL KEDESH EXPEDITION

CEREAL BULLA. Wheat and grapes stamped onto this bulla, or clay lump, represent the typical produce of ancient Kedesh. Identified here by a variant of its Greek name (Kudissos), the site on the Lebanese border in Israel’s Upper Galilee has yielded paleobotanical evidence of grains that may help identify some of the obscure kinds of wheat mentioned in ancient papyri.
